Stonyfield's Climate Story

Stonyfield Organic has a long-standing commitment to reducing our GHG emissions and advocating for climate action.  In 1997 we became the first US manufacturer to offset all greenhouse gas emissions from facility energy use - and we still do! Over the years, we’ve installed solar panels and converted wastewater to biogas at our plant, and pioneered full-scope lifecycle analysis of our products. In 2019 we set a new science-based target to reduce our total emissions by 30% by 2030, including Scope 3, and received validation from the Science Based Targets Initiative.  Our work focuses on five key areas: agriculture, packaging, waste, logistics, and energy. Half of Stonyfield’s emissions come from agriculture, so we’re especially focused on the opportunity to help farmers be part of the solution through improving soil health and increasing soil carbon sequestration.  To do this, we have teamed up with Wolfe’s Neck Center for Agriculture and the Environment to launch OpenTEAM, the first open-source technology ecosystem in the world to address soil health and mitigate climate change. OpenTEAM is intended to revolutionize the way farmers of all types and sizes access site-specific decision support on how they can improve soil health on their operation and track the results.

“Among the many threats posed by the climate crisis, perhaps the greatest is the potential it has to impact food production.  The good news is that organic farmers are already focused on building soil health and eliminating the use of synthetic fertilizers, two steps that can help agriculture shift from being a source of greenhouse gas emissions to being a net sink. At Stonyfield we are excited to be working with the Organic Trade Association’s Climate Change Task Force on advancing organic agriculture as a climate change solution. The climate change principles adopted by the association provide a roadmap for how federal policy can support climate mitigation and adaptation in agriculture.”

- Britt Lundgren, Director of Organic and Sustainable Agriculture at Stonyfield Farm
