This manual is provided as an educational resource and introduction to handling, storing and selling organic products in Canada. It was developed by the Canada Organic Trade Association for Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Organic Value Chain Roundtable. It has been developed in consultation with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, with members of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s Canada Organic Office, and representatives of the national and regional organic and retail sectors.
Users of this manual are reminded that it is a voluntary best practices guide meant to provide them with insight on how to protect the organic integrity of the products they handle. By adopting any or all of the practices and procedures described herein, retailers and individuals do so under their own recognisance: these best-practices will not guarantee organic products will maintain their organic status, nor that retailers will necessarily pass inspection of their organic handling, storing or selling activities by CFIA inspectors.
The authors maintain, always, that the most rigorous manner of assuring organic integrity is to have all handling, storing and preparing activities fully certified to the Canadian Organic Standards by a CFIA-approved certifying body.
