Organic takes on Climate Change

The threat that climate change poses to our world, our ecosystem and our health demands bold policy solutions, and, as the devastating impacts of a warming Earth mount, the push for the development of robust and comprehensive federal climate policy is gaining traction. Organic agriculture can be a part of the solution and help tackle climate change through its ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, store away huge amounts of carbon, and enable farmers to be resilient in an evolving climate.

In August 2020, we released a major report on organic and its ability to mitigate climate change, identifying policy opportunities to elevate the role of organic in the climate change discussion, support organic farmers and encourage transition to organic farming. Reflecting close dialogue with organic stakeholders and the association’s membership, the white paper, “Advancing Organic to Mitigate Climate Change,” incorporates the key principles identified by the Organic Trade Association’s Board of Directors to achieve meaningful climate policy solutions.

The trade association also recently announced the launch of a Climate Task Force, open to all Organic Trade Association members. The task force will amplify the Organic Trade Association’s voice in climate policy discussions by advocating for policies that address the association’s core principles and sharing recommendations with lawmakers and key stakeholders.

“Extreme weather variability, caused by climate change, is the greatest challenge facing farmers,” said Doug Crabtree, Montana organic farmer and member of the Organic Trade Association Board of Directors. “The (over)use of synthetic nitrogen fertilizers is agriculture’s most egregious contribution to climate change. Organic farmers demonstrate that farming systems can be productive, profitable and a significant part of the solution to climate change by avoiding synthetic nitrogen, building soil organic matter and sequestering carbon in the soil. I am proud that our trade association is taking the lead on illustrating the key role of organic food and farming in managing climate change.”

We hosted our first every virtual fly-in on climate change! Organic producers and businesses from across the country participated in this ground-breaking event.

The need to tackle urgent problems never goes away, even in the midst of a global pandemic. Responding to that need, the Organic Trade Association is putting into motion a Congressional fly-in unlike any it’s held in the past to address one of today’s most serious challenges – climate change.

Many businesses have implemented innovative programs and initiatives that support climate change mitigation while strengthening their own supply chains and brand identities. Soil health is a particular focus for many companies, and some have resulted in programs that pay farmers directly for sequestering carbon in their soil. Sustainability efforts touch the entire value chain, with some companies requiring more sustainable packaging, buying local goods when available, avoiding plastic, using more renewable energy, and reducing food waste. Other companies offset their carbon footprint by planting and protecting carbon sinks in the developing world, providing sustainable livelihoods to disadvantaged communities.

Stonyfield Organic has a long-standing commitment to reducing our GHG emissions and advocating for climate action.  In 1997 we became the first US manufacturer to offset all greenhouse gas emissions from facility energy use - and we still do! Over the years, we’ve installed solar panels and converted wastewater to biogas at our plant, and pioneered full-scope lifecycle analysis of our products. In 2019 we set a new science-based target to reduce our total emissions by 30% by 2030, including Scope 3, and received validation from the Science Based Targets Initiative.

Anheuser-Busch is incentivizing transition to organic production through transition premiums, transition grants, long-term contracts, and technical assistance for its supply chain participants for Michelob ULTRA Pure Gold, the first major beer brand to be USDA certified organic. The innovative Contract for Change program provides financial incentives and technical support for farmers who are ready to transition to organic. They collaborated with the Organic Trade Association-sponsored Organic Agronomy Training Service (OATS) to provide the needed technical training for their staff agronomists, and contracted farmers to succeed in organic production.

The Global Organic Textiles Standard (GOTS) is using a private voluntary add-on certification label to incentivize organic production of raw materials. The GOTS certification standard stipulates requirements throughout the supply chain for both ecology and labor conditions in textile and apparel manufacturing using organically produced raw materials. The market incentive for GOTS certified goods drives demand for climate-friendly organic production of important fiber crops such as cotton, flax, and hemp.

General Mills has partnered with Montana farmer Nate Powell-Palm on a limited edition production of certified organic Annie’s Mac & Cheese that incorporates crops grown using regenerative practices that improve soil health. In 2018, General Mills started purchasing certified organic yellow peas and durum wheat to incorporate into the elbow pasta in their popular Annie’s Mac & Cheese line. Not only are these crops key to soil fertility on Nate’s farm but they also provide a healthy and nutritious protein source for consumers. The launch was so successful that General Mills is now sourcing complete crop rotations from single origin farms in Montana for use in their Mac & Cheese and Bunny Grahams.

Danone North America launched an ambitious soil health initiative in partnership with the dairy farmers from whom they buy milk, the growers who provide feed for the cows, and soil experts and academics to build best-in-class soil health programs. The world’s largest yogurt maker pledged to commit up to $6 million for the research program over the next five years. Danone is determined to help lead an industry-wide transition to a low-carbon economy. Their strategy to achieve carbon neutrality is based on the following pillars: reducing emissions, transforming agricultural practices to sequester more carbon in the ground, eliminating deforestation from our supply chain, and offsetting the emissions that remain.

The second in Organic Trade Association’s summer Webinar series on climate change will begin with a scientific grounding in the connections between organic practices and associated increases in soil carbon, and reductions in nitrogen pollution. From there, members of the trade association’s Board of Directors will share news about the Board’s recent work on policy principles to support organic as a key to mitigating climate change. Panelists will discuss legislation introduced in the U.S. House and Senate that prioritizes agricultural solutions, as well as a new report from the U.S. House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis.

Organic priorities in the climate change fight

Organic agriculture provides a critical opportunity to mitigate climate change and at the same time create economic, environmental and health benefits for all those involved in our food system--from the grower and the processor, to the distributor and the consumer. But although public and private initiatives to support organic as a climate mitigation tool exist, stronger federal support is needed for organic to reach its full potential to fight against climate change.

The Organic Trade Association’s Board of Directors early this year determined that organic had to be elevated in the climate change policy discussions that are increasingly taking place in the halls of Congress, in government offices, in corporate boardrooms. The Board also agreed that the Organic Trade Association, as the leading voice in the nation for the organic sector, should spearhead the effort to advance organic as a solution to climate change and to protect organic from the risk of climate change. A climate task force consisting of seven Board members was formed with the goal of developing principles for good climate policy to guide organic’s engagement in climate policy discussions.

In June at the association’s annual meeting, the Board unanimously endorsed ten principles for climate policy.

Incorporating the Organic Trade Association’s guiding principles to fight climate change, the new white paper offers specific recommendations for policymakers to support organic farmers and encourage transition to organic farming as a key strategy for climate change mitigation.

U.S. communities, economies and ecosystems are under threat from climate change. Federal policies can help advance organic as a key solution by encouraging the adoption of organic practices and maximizing benefits for mitigating climate change. The Organic Trade Association and our members stand ready to engage and support federal lawmakers in advancing these recommendations.

  • Specific policy recommendations in the white paper include:
  • Elevating organic as a key voice in climate-smart agricultural policy;
  • Establishing a national program to support transitioning organic farmers by reducing financial risks, improving market infrastructure development and increasing access to land;
  • Developing a competitive grant program to provide technical services to organic and transitioning farmers to create better access to information about organic production methods that sequester greenhouse gases and improve crop yields.
  • Creating a federal Healthy Soils pilot program, based on existing programs at USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service and the California Healthy Soils Initiative.
