    Sustainable Foods Summit

    Wednesday, January 16, 2019 - 8:00am to Thursday, January 17, 2019 - 5:00pm

The next edition of the Sustainable Foods Summit will feature plant-based foods, sustainable ingredients, and green marketing. The ninth North American edition of this executive summit will take place January 16-17, 2019 in San Francisco. With growing interest in plant-based alternatives to livestock products, the summit discusses the future direction of plant-based foods.

Plant-based alternatives to meat & dairy products are gaining popularity, with some arguing the future of sustainable foods is intricately linked to such products. What is future outlook for vegan & plant-based foods? What are opportunities in the North American market? These questions will be addressed in the upcoming Sustainable Foods Summit.

Representing Organic Trade Association at the Summit, Melody Meyer will speak January 16th about how organic businesses are striving for continuous improvement. Meyer will provide a market update, and discuss a number of fronts in which the label – already the gold standard for agricultural stewardship and processing standards the world around – continues to innovate in areas of soil health, climate change mitigation and other sustainability measures, and private sector initiatives that push the trade forward, including those that create and assure supply chain integrity.

The panel is titled "Going Beyond Organic: Regenerative Agriculture". The panel will be lead by Jeff Moyer, Executive Director of Rodale Institute, and takes place Wednesday January 16 from 10:10 a.m. - 10:40 a.m. For more information, contact Angela Jagiello.

    EcoFarm Conference

    EcoFarm Conference

    Wednesday, January 23, 2019 - 10:00am to Saturday, January 26, 2019 - 5:00pm

The Ecological Farming Association (EcoFarm) will present the 39th annual EcoFarm Conference January 23 - 26, 2019 in Pacific Grove, CA - Featuring over 70 workshops, intensives, keynote speakers, an exhibitor marketplace, seed swap, awards banquet, live entertainment, mixers, and organic culinary fare. Workshops offer practical and cutting edge information on crop production, livestock, soil health, marketing, distribution, and food systems. As the oldest and largest organic farming conference in the West, EcoFarm is a prime networking and educational hub for farmers, ranchers, distributors, retailers, activists, researchers, and educators.

The Organic Center's Director of Science Programs, Jessica Shade, will be leading the following workshop at the Conference on January 24th from 8:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.:

Organic Truths and Lies – the REAL Science Behind the Benefits of Organic
    Moderator: Lisa J. Bunin, PhD, Organic Advocacy;
Speakers: Jessica Shade, PhD, The Organic Center; Asa Bradman, PhD, University of California, Berkeley.

Every year  scientific research on the benefits of organic grows and so does the  spread of misinformation about the effects of organic on our health and environment. This workshop will dispel the myths and highlight what some of the most recent scientific studies say, and don’t say about how organic agriculture impacts our communities and ecosystems. You can rest assured that the benefits are enormous. For example, research has shown  that on average, organic farms have 44 percent higher levels of humic acid—the component of soil that sequesters carbon over the long term—than soils not managed organically. Come hear the latest and greatest about how organic fits into positive strategies to improve soil health, biodiversity, clean water, mitigate climate change, and reduce dietary and occupational exposurea to pesticides.

Organic Trade Association Board Member David Lively of Organically Grown Company is organizing an Organic Trade Association social at the EcoFarm Conference on Thursday, January 24th at 5:00 p.m.:

But What has the Organic Trade Association Done for Me Lately?
Ever wonder exactly what the Organic Trade Association (OTA) does, or how its efforts benefit you?  Or maybe you are one of those of the opinion that the OTA’s activities only serve the needs of “the big boys” and not the historic trade and the organic grower base? Here is a chance to sharpen you awareness of the many challenges facing the organic movement and trade, and learn how our most significant national organization takes them on. This event, sponsored by OTA members from the fresh produce sector, will feature OTA Executive Director Laura Batcha in a Q&A session covering the broad range of concerns and activities that occupy the OTA’s staff and members on a daily basis. The setting is casual and the refreshments first rate. This event is open to both members and non-members. Please join us for an enlightening discussion!

The Organic Trade Association's CEO/Executive Director, Laura Batcha, will be speaking at a workshop at the Conference on Friday, January 25th from 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.:

Real, Regenerative, Regular? Which Organic Seal for You?
Presenters: Laura Batcha, Organic Trade Association; Paul Muller, Full Belly Farm; Elizabeth Whitlow, Regenerative Organic Alliance

After extensive controversy over how USDA regulates certified organic, particularly with regards to hydroponics, animal welfare, and corporate bias, two new certifications have arrived on the scene. Both start with USDA organic and add additional features. Representatives will discuss the new programs and what they offer organic farmers and consumers, and we will also hear the perspective from supporters of the existing USDA program. The Real Organic Project, founded by organic farmers, began in 2018 to refine stricter standards than the USDA, testing them in real-world situations with plans to roll out in 2019. Patagonia, Dr. Bronner’s and Rodale Institute are sponsoring the Regenerative Organic label, an add-on to USDA’s organic program, with significantly stricter regulations for soil management, carbon sequestration, animal welfare, ecosystem protection, and farmworker health and safety.

    Global Organic Produce Exposition (GOPEX)

    Friday, February 1, 2019 - 8:00am to 5:00pm

The Packer’s Global Organic Produce Exposition & Conference (GOPEX) provides a forum to meet the rapidly changing needs of professionals who grow, distribute, pack and market organic produce. This international trade show and conference provides the ideal opportunity for organic produce professionals from around the world to network, exchange ideas, source new products and services, and do business with the industry's leading growers, distributors, packers, marketers and retailers.

The Organic Trade Association is organizing a keynote and two panel discussions at the Conference on February 1, 2019. More details on each session below, and for more information contact Angela Jagiello

    Shannon Allen Keynote
Shannon will discuss how her passion for organic and concern for her family’s unique nutritional needs led her to launch grown™ an organic quick serve restaurant, with her husband, NBA All-Star Ray Allen. Throughout Ray’s 18-year NBA career, Shannon made sure that he ate the healthiest foods to help him maintain his edge and stay in peak physical condition. When the Allens’ middle son, Walker, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, Shannon’s zeal for providing healthful, nutritious food for her very busy family inspired her to open the nation’s first all organic fast food restaurant with a drive through. With the latest science about the health benefits of organic from The Organic Center, Allen will inspire you with her passion for nutritious food, and her vibrant entrepreneurial spirt.

    Athletes Embrace Organic
With all the nutritional resources in the world available to them, many professional athletes are choosing organic, and many dieticians are advocating organic for their elite athlete clientele. In fact, a number of these individuals have felt so strongly about the value of organic that they go on to launch organic products after the conclusion of their athletic careers. Our panel will discuss athletes’ embrace of organic. Is this a trend? Why? What’s propelling it, and what barriers need to be overcome for the trend to expand?

The Organic Center Presents: Breeding for Flavor
Remarkable results are possible when seed breeders expand their focus beyond yield and transportability as primary desirable traits, and begin selecting for other qualities such as flavor, nutrition, and resilience to weather and pest pressures. Hear from cutting edge researchers about what they’ve been able to accomplish, and what we can look forward to in the future. The session will be moderated by Dr. Amber Sciligo, The Organic Center’s new Director of Science Programs. She will be joined by Erica Renaud, PhD., who manages organic seed and herbs in North America for Vitalis/Enza Zaden, USA.

Farm Bill & Organic Policy in 2019
Federal policy plays a critical role in supporting organic production systems, and with the process underway for enacting and implementing a new farm bill, now is the time to focus in on how to defend and strengthen key programs and policies that benefit organic producers. Additionally, transitioning to organic production remains a key barrier to meet the expanding organic demand, and now is the time to identify policy opportunities to address this gap. This workshop will provide an update from Washington, DC on the 2018-19 Farm Bill process, and dig into policies ranging from working lands conservation and crop insurance to research, certification cost share, and enhanced enforcement against fraudulent organic imports.  Policy experts will provide an update regarding the long and winding path to the 2018-19 farm bill. Come learn about key strategies and opportunities for grassroots outreach to engage and mobilize around critical organic wins as the farm bill process moves forward (or, as we work to implement the 2018 farm bill). In addition to digging into the specific programs that matter for organic producers, if the 2018 Farm Bill has not yet been passed, we will walk through the “marker bills” that have been introduced to advance critical organic priorities. Finally, the 116th Congress will be in place in early 2019, so this workshop will also cover the new and returning members of the House and Senate Agriculture Committees, with an eye to members of the Organic Caucus who will be instrumental for championing our organic priorities throughout the farm bill writing and implementation process. This workshop will also involve feedback from the audience regarding policy needs and options.

    Organic Week in Washington, D.C.

    Monday, May 20, 2019 - 9:00am to Thursday, May 23, 2019 - 3:00pm

Experience the impact of organic – three great events in one powerful week.

It’s time to double-down on big ideas and better solutions. In the backdrop of the nation’s capital, join us at the epicenter of culinary creativity for a collaborative event about the future of organic. We’ll explore leading-edge thinking, discuss bold strategies, and take incremental steps to advance policy and private sector solutions.

The Organic Trade Association kicks off Organic Week in Washington, D.C. with Member Day on Monday, May 20, at our headquarters in the Hall of The States. On Tuesday, May 21, we will head to Capitol Hill for Advocacy Day to educate the nation’s top policymakers on the importance of organic. The week's activities will culminate with Conference Day in a unique new venue – Dock 5 – a creative urban space in the nexus of the bustling, historic Union Market. There, we will focus on bold ideas and critical conversations of consequence to our industry.

Small organic producers to major growers, family-run organic operations to nationwide companies, researchers and policy advocates to distributors and retailers will come together to advance organic priorities. You can’t afford to miss this intimate offering of education, advocacy, and networking brought to you by the Organic Trade Association.

Register now, or learn more about sponsorship opportunities. We hope to see you there!
