Receiving the Growing the Organic Industry leadership Award will be Bob Anderson of Sustainable Strategies—Advisers in Food and Agriculture. Bob first became active in organic by operating the Walnut Acres brand for 30 years beginning in 1969. A long-time organic pioneer, he was the longest-serving chair of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Organic Standards Board. Over his career, he has championed organic standards, helped grow organic businesses, and served domestically and internationally as an ambassador for organic.

OTA submits comments on Organic Check-off

The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Jan. 17, 2017 announced it is seeking public comments to a proposal for a nationwide research and promotion check-off program for the organic industry. The Organic Trade Association (OTA) has hailed this action as a significant step that will advance the growing organic sector and have important and long-lasting benefits for organic farmers, businesses and consumers alike.

Sustainable Food Summit

The Sustainable Food Summit will be held June 1-2 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. IFT 2017 Annual Meeting and Food Expo

The IFT 2017 Annual Meeting and Food Expo will take place in Las Vegas, NV, June 25-28, 2017. The Organic Trade Association will be attending and presenting in a session titled "Developing Organic and Natural Ingredients for Use in Organic Products." Attendees will learn about several approaching regulatory changes to the USDA organic regulations on the use of natural flavors, colors, carrageenan and celery powder and gain an appreciation of the market opportunity available for food technologists who specialize in creating organic and natural alternatives. The presentation is scheduled for Wednesday, June 28, 10:30am-12:00pm. Speakers include Kim Dietz, Senior Manager of Environmental, Natural and Organic with J.M. Smucker Co., Steve Pierce, CEO of Ribus Inc., Tony Moore, Chief Flavorist at Flavor Producers, and Erin Silva, Assistant Professor with University of Wisconsin-Madison. The session will be moderated by OTA's VP of Regulatory and Technical Affairs.

Live Organic Pop-Up Shop

From May 4-6, 2017, the Organic Trade Association's Fiber Council will host a two-day organic fiber and textiles pop-up event! The event will take place at a health food store in New York City that will showcase certified organic fiber products and brands across all categories nationwide. The purpose is to raise awareness, promote organic fiber and textiles, and educate shoppers and the media on why purchasing organic fiber and textiles matters for people and the environment. Farm Bill Educational Summit hosted by Agri-Pulse

Agri-Pulse, the nation’s leading source of farm and food policy information, will hold a Farm Bill Educational Summit at the National Press Club on March 20. The Organic Trade Association will be one of the sponsors of the event, and OTA CEO, Laura Batcha, will be on a panel to talk about organic and the opportunities it offers. The event will be attended by key congressional staffers and policy makers who will be directly involved in the creation of the 2018 Farm Bill.
