OTA is the leading voice for the organic trade in the United States, representing over 9,500 organic businesses across 50 states. Its members include growers, shippers, processors, certifiers, farmers' associations, distributors, importers, exporters, consultants, retailers, and others. Our member businesses work together through networking, advocacy, and other initiatives to encourage and protect organic farming practices and to share messages about the positive environmental and nutritional attributes of organic products with consumers, the media, and policymakers.

Position Title: Public Affairs Communications Specialist

Position Summary

Working closely across our Communications, Regulatory and Government Affairs teams, the Public Affairs Communications Specialist will be responsible for developing and managing various communications, media, and public affairs activities that effectively inform and engage our key stakeholders. The right candidate will need to be a strong writer and researcher with knowledge of organic food, agriculture, and climate change policy preferred.

Responsibilities

Guide the Public Affairs’ response to daily events on issues related to the organic trade and our policy advocacy strategy.

Prepare and edit high-quality communications materials such as news releases, media pitches, talking points, presentations, letters, case studies, fact sheets, Q&As, etc. for various stakeholder audiences 

Work closely with our Regulatory and Government Affairs teams to develop outreach and messaging strategies and tactics for legislative, regulatory and advocacy initiatives - including traditional communications, message development, web presence, advocacy and social media, to educate, motivate, and influence target audiences.

Lead an earned media strategy targeting D.C. [and national] agriculture/trade/policy media to support the trade association’s strategic business priorities and measurably enhance the company's reputation.

Conduct media monitoring and analysis of key issues and organic-specific food, agriculture, and climate policy coverage impacting our key markets and stakeholders.

Create and maintain established media relationships and lists, track media coverage and compile media summaries.

Field, respond, and track incoming media inquiries and opportunities. 

Assist leadership in determining the most effective public affairs spokespeople and prepare them for events, roundtables, media, etc. Organize media briefings as needed.

Lead public affairs internal communications, Board reporting, quarterly updates, talking points for staff, Board and membership to ensure awareness and visibility of important activity.

Support the messaging and operations of the Organic PAC. 

What we're looking for:

Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, political science, public policy, or another relevant field.

5 years+(or equivalent experience) of working with or for a political or government press office, media, public affairs or corporate communications team.

Experience and familiarity working with national journalists in print, radio, broadcast, and online, including D.C. media outlets and journalists.

Excellent research, writing and editing skills; ability to produce clear, concise materials on tight deadlines.

The ability to communicate persuasively and professionally, in writing and verbally to a wide variety of stakeholders including media, policymakers, trade, and coalition partners.

Experience working on integrated advocacy campaigns and political campaigns, using traditional communications and social media.

Ability to bring new ideas to our national political strategy for organic food and agriculture, and engage in traditional and social media messaging.

Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to follow projects through to completion.

Highly developed interpersonal skills and an ability to work creatively and effectively with others in a team environment.

Comfortable with new technologies, software platforms and CRM databases (ex Meltwater, Salesforce)

Organic food and agriculture, and climate change policy experience and knowledge are highly desirable.

Associate Director, Digital Content

Position Title: Associate Director, Digital Content

Position Summary

We are seeking a dynamic individual to join the Communications team to manage the day-to-day digital communications for the Organic Trade Association (OTA) and our sister non-profit organization, The Organic Center. The perfect candidate will be fluent in digital and social tools from email marketing to content management to social posting, able to thrive in a fast-paced, start-up environment, and flexible with strong multi-tasking skills to manage competing priorities.

This position requires strong writing skills and communications acumen in addition to digital tool mastery. 

Responsibilities

Manage and implement online communications strategy across our channels (email marketing, websites, and social media), including developing and leading digital campaigns from start to finish, content development, and proactively spotting opportunities to advance our work using digital communications.

  • Manage day-to-day email marketing campaigns from start to finish.
  • Manage our websites, with regular updating to reflect priorities, critical issues and industry news, and keeping consistent with branding and messaging.
  • Manage OTA and The Organic Center’s social media efforts by developing editorial calendars and engaging content, planning outreach during campaigns, posting to various channels, tracking metrics, reporting findings.

Manage an organization-wide outgoing communications and content calendar across channels.

Develop compelling original content across digital and web platforms (written and visual), and ensure that all communications are consistent with brand messaging guidelines.

Support the creation and sharing of graphics and interactive content as well as presentations.

Lead digital advertising strategy and identify opportunities for expansion. 

Track and analyze data to help assess progress toward reaching strategic goals, increase audience engagement, and find unique ways to engage followers that advance organizational needs.

Provide digital support for major events for OTA and The Organic Center.

Project management with vendors such as graphic designers, PR firms, web developers and printers.

What we're looking for:

Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing or another relevant field.

4+ years experience in creating content for digital experiences: social media platforms, websites, email, ideally in a marketing or communication environment

Experience translating and reformatting complex content for a wide audience

Strong oral and written communication skills, including writing (especially writing for the web), editing, and proofreading 

Strong aptitude for visual and interactive content creation in addition to text-based content

Familiarity with social media publishing and measurement platforms, including paid social campaigns

Experience with email marketing tools and outgoing communications platforms (Mailchimp or Constant Contact, Meltwater, etc.)

Experience with web content management systems, Drupal is a plus

Familiarity with content creation tools (Canva, Adobe Creative, etc.)

Experience with analytics software, Google Analytic, as well as social media platform reporting

Willingness to learn new software and platforms as needed

Organic food and agriculture, sustainability, and climate change knowledge are highly desirable.
