Organic Acreage Stakeholder Meeting

OTA's Nate Lewis will attend the Organic Acreage Stakeholder Meeting, immediately following the Northern Plains Sustainable Agriculture Society’s field day at the NDSU Research Extension Center in Carrington, ND, on July 14.. The U.S. Organic Grain Collaboration is seeking input from farmers on a strategic plan to increase market opportunities and investments that will help to support the expansion of organic grain production (feed grade and food grade). This session is an opportunity for farmers, seed dealers, buyers, processors, and organic grain customers to ask questions about the project and share insights about where additional investment is most needed. The collaboration will be represented by Grain Millers, Annie’s, Nature’s Path, Clif Bar, and the Organic Trade Association

SENASICA Organic Materials Training

Thursday, June 11, 2015 - 4:00pm to Saturday, June 13, 2015 - 8:00pm

OTA's Nate Lewis will attend this 3 day training for SENASICA in Mexico (Mexican equivalent of USDA)  SENASICA is responsible for implementing Mexico's organic program, and OTA and OMRI will provide information regaurding organic materials review. For more information, contact Nate.

Foster Farms Press Conference

Organic Day, Tokyo Japan

World’s Fair Expo 2015

OTA is participating in the World’s Fair 2015 “Food 2.0” in the USA Pavilion October 5-9. A collaboration with the U.S. Department of State and the James Beard Foundation, this one-of-a-kind pavilion features a vertical farm, interactive exhibitions, and daily programming all about our food system. OTA will lead a symposium on women in organic agriculture, organic agriculture and technology, and survey consumers and buyers about their opinions on USDA certified organic products. Organic AgTech:  Exploring the Intersection of Organic Agriculture and Technology

Join OTA for a discussion on organic agriculture and the increasingly common use of technology on the 
farm.  Inventor of the pavilion’s Vertical Farm Wall Dr. Nate Storey will discuss his innovative company Bright AgroTech how on farm technology is helping a new generation of farmers enter agriculture.  Dr. Storey is joined by Julie Versman of Marrone Bio Innovations (MBI).  MBI develops bio-based products for pest management and plant health.   There is a growing debate around the use of technology and organic farming, come hear from experts on this trending topic.

OTA in Taiwan

Wednesday, June 3, 2015 - 1:00pm to Sunday, June 7, 2015 - 6:00pm

Bob Anderson, senior trade advisor, and Monique Marez, associate director for international trade, will lead an organic diplomacy mission in Taiwan in early June.  According to the latest HTS Code report, Taiwan is a key destination for US organic exports.  Nevertheless, exporting products to Taiwan can be challenging, for example there are differences in MRL standards particular to Taiwan that impact various parts of the organic supply chain.  As such, OTA is heading to Taipei to meet with US and Taiwanese officials to discuss the current state of organic trade with the US and Taiwan, and to host an info session  and meet and greet with key Taiwanese importers.  In addition OTA will spend an afternoon with a lead certifier in Taiwan to learn more about the Taiwanese organic program. OTA in China

Monique Marez, associate director for international trade will be in Guangzhou and Shanghai, China investigating e-commerce retail options for organic products.  E-commerce is a growing retail channel in China with over 300 million Chinese consumers making purchases on-line. This is a particularly interesting channel for organic products because products sold through e-commerce do not need to be certified to the Chinese organic standards, and do not incur tariffs if fulfilled through a free trade zone.   For more information about e-commerce in China, please contact Monique.

Global Organic Textiles Standard (GOTS) Strategy Meeting

On June 23-24, Marni Karlin (OTA’s Vice President of Government Affairs/General Counsel), who serves as OTA’s representative on the GOTS Advisory Council, and Gwendolyn Wyard (OTA's Senior Director of Regulatory and Technical Affairs) who serves as the GOTS Technical Representative for North America, will be attending a GOTS strategy meeting in Frankfurt, Germany. The two-day meeting will explore the "GOTS journey to 2020." Discussions will include a deep dive look at additional certification options for products such as leather, sustainable processing for more production inputs, strategic questions of governance structure, and increasing GOTS visibility.

PCO Farm Fest

Pennsylania Certified Organic's FarmFest will be help August 7-8 at the Grange Fairgrounds at 169 Homan Lane, Centre Hall, PA. FarmFest is a fun, frr, community-building event that fosters knowledge of organic agriculture and sustainable living through educational opportunities, local foods, lively entertainment and interactive family activities. OTA's Nate Lewis will participate in the event.
