Founded 21 years ago, Happy Dirt is an organic produce distribution company based in Durham, North Carolina. CEO and Founder Sandi Kronick launched the business with a clear purpose: to support farmers transitioning out of tobacco production and into organic fruits and vegetables.
That mission has grown into a thriving, farmer-owned company with 16 growers as co-owners, in addition to staff leadership. Happy Dirt’s commitment has always been twofold—ensuring farmers have a sustainable economic future while expanding access to healthy, organic produce for communities across the South.
Sandi reflects on the impact organic agriculture has had, both for farmers and for society at large. Organic produce not only sustains family farms but also represents a critical opportunity to improve human health and protect the planet.
As part of OTA’s 40th Anniversary Member Story Series, Happy Dirt celebrates the solidarity, community, and advocacy that has supported the growth of organic for decades—and looks ahead to the opportunities still to come.
