Fair Hill Farms, Inc.

Fair Hill is a fourth generation dairy and certified organic grain farm located near picturesque Chestertown on Maryland's eastern shore. We sell certified organic field crops and hay.
Ed Fry, whose farm is on Rte 213 just north of Chestertown, has been farming for 30 years. Certified organic since 1999 for 400 acres of corn, alfalfa and pasture, he’s been very happy with the results so far.

“ In 1999 and 2000 my organic corn actually out yielded my conventionally grown corn. 1999 was a very dry year, and with the organic corn we saw that it looked full a lot longer, because the organic nitrogen was being released at a much more desirable rate than on the conventionally grown corn,” he says.

In 2000 Fry’s organic corn yield was 181 bushels, versus 177 bushels conventionally grown. Production costs were lower on the organic corn, though the labor per acre is higher, which means that he doesn’t have to farm but we as many acres for the same amount of profit.

“Last year, to produce a bushel of conventional corn was approximately $2.23,” he says. “The cost to produce a bushel of organic corn was $1.79. We got $2.25 a bushel for the conventional and a premium price of $4.00 for the organic.”

Ferrara Candy Company

At Ferrara Pan Candy Company, a sour face is a happy face. Best known for its venerable, mouth-puckering Lemonhead candies (500 million every year), Ferrara makes such other familiar treats as Red Hots, Jaw Busters, Boston Baked Beans, and Atomic FireBalls. Panned candies, so-called because they are made in a rotating pan, are the company's specialty; but it also makes chocolate confections under the Ferrara name, also with Black Forest Gummies. Ferrara started out in business making the pastel-colored sugar-coated almonds served at Italian weddings and expanded to serve the candy appetites of not just newlyweds, but kids (of all ages).

Forager Project

Based in San Francisco, Forager Project was co-founded by Stephen Williamson and his stepson John-Charles Hanley out of a deep frustration with deceptive food labels — especially “vegetable juices” that in fact lead with fruit. From the beginning, Forager Project has been committed to creating a line of organic, plant-based, dairy-free foods made from clean, simple ingredients.

We started our journey with cold-pressed vegetable juices that lead with vegetables, rooting Forager Project in a philosophy of “letting good food be.” We quickly added low-sugar, nutrient-dense nut milk drinks, with our eyes on evolving the plant-based milk category.

Foster Farms

Besides being one of the nation's top poultry processors, Foster Poultry Farms never uses hormones (nor does it inject salt water into its birds to plump them up). Vertically integrated, the company takes chickens and turkeys from the incubator to grocers' meat cases, delis, and freezers. Doing business as Foster Farms, it sells some 750 poultry products mostly under the Foster Farms brand. Aside from its primary retail-centric operations, the company supplies prepared foods to the foodservice industry, including restaurant and other hospitality operators. The family-owned and -operated company was established in 1939 by Max and Verda Foster. The family also owns and operates sister company Foster Dairy Farms.
